Abstract
A complete scalar hysteresis model for magnetic recording media is presented. A hysteresis model is discussed that is capable of computing both major and minor loop traversals. Since the system is nonlinear and hysteretic, traditional parameter identification strategies cannot be used. The identification problem for such a system is formulated and a solution to the complete identification problem is given. It is shown that under certain conditions, the model has seven parameters, and that the order in which these parameters are identified is a critical part of the algorithm. The identification algorithm is robust in the presence of experimental errors. The model has been developed to accurately describe magnetic hysteresis, but since it is phenomenological in nature, the method described can be used to characterize hysteretic systems, including the identification of such systems
