Abstract
Summary form only given. The VLxV series lithium-ion batteries from Saft are designed to provide over 10 kW/kg of pulsed power output. Some of the batteries´ applications subject the batteries to operating temperatures of 40 to 45degC, when an increase of battery output power of 10 percent was observed. For pulsed power applications such as electromagnetic launch, hundreds of megawatts of battery power may be required. It is of interest to determine the optimal operating temperature for maximum power output from the batteries. The Institute for Advanced Technology (IAT) performed a series of experiments involving heating the battery cells to various temperatures, up to 75degC, and pulses up to 3400 A into resistive loads. The experimental results showed that output power increases nonlinearly with respect to temperature. This nonlinear relationship was not observed in outputs when pulsing at lower currents.
