Abstract :
Some results of studies carried out by Royal PTT Nederland NV, PTT Research on powering the fiber systems in the local loop are presented. To power the active nodes in the optical feeder and in the future optical distribution network, several powering concepts are studied. To meet performance demands, a backup power supply is necessary. The situation in the Netherlands and the plans of Royal PTT Nederland NV to introduce optical fiber in the local loop are described. A calculation method is described for centralized powering and the possibility of comparing the costs of centralized and local powering
