Abstract :
This paper describes the TSM current response of high voltage cable grade XLPE with and without tree retardants subjected to a dc field of 50 kV/mm. The evolution of the space charge distribution is monitored with the time of aging. It is proposed that the changes observed in the behavior of TSM current with the aging time could be used to determine the difference in the operating conditions of various polymeric materials. The advantage of this approach is that it does not require the determination of the actual distribution of space charge in the insulation and thus it could constitute a very simple diagnostic tool
