Abstract :
Speech, audio and images have become normal components of Web pages. In most cases, the speech links or audio on images are files which occupy significant disk space. As it becomes popular to use Internet Web sites to market speech coders, on-line files without the coder, do little to highlight the useful features of coders in order to convince customers. Rather, speech has to be coded and reconstructed on-line via browsers to demonstrate realistically to the customer. In addition to the storage space required, the time and costs associated with transferring speech files through the Internet are huge. We describe an online speech decoder which the Web browser uses to reconstruct a manageable small file and thereby save access and waiting time. It also leads to reduced costs, since the retrieved files are many times smaller than usual. We integrate the speech coder as a component of the browser, thereby extending the browser´s capability. This is done by implementing a dedicated plug-in, a browser-based encoder/decoder which receives compressed speech from our Web site and reconstructs the speech locally online
