Abstract
In this paper, we will focus on the optical transport network in Taiwan. On the main island, the fibers for transport network are constructed to support both 1 + 1 routes and ring architecture. There are three submarine fiber systems connecting the main island to three remote islands. Two more systems employing Er-doped fiber amplifier technology are to come by the end of 1997. The amplifier technology give us the potential ability of future upgrade to narrowband wavelength division multiplexing
