Abstract
The proliferation of multimedia and Internet applications in local area networks (LANs) has greatly increased bandwidth requirements and led to faster transmission protocols. These developments point toward opportunities for cost-effective optoelectronic components for use in these new high-speed networks. If some real and perceived disadvantages to utilizing optoelectronics in LANs can be overcome, the demand for optoelectronic solutions will increase dramatically
