  • Abstract
This paper describes a concatenated single parity check (SPC) turbo product code for optical transmission systems with a code rate of 0.8. The max-log-MAP algorithm used provides a net coding gain of 11.6 dB at a bit error rate of 10-15, which is only 1.4 dB from the theoretical limit. This code is highly applicable for the implementation in ultra-long-haul optical transmission systems with a high bandwidth. The extraction of the extrinsic information out of the SPC code is explained in the simplest manner
