  • Abstract
Overhead functions of information transport networks based on asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) techniques are described. A layered structure concept suitable for operation and maintenance (O&M) is developed. In particular, section overhead and path overhead are considered in order to evolve a flexible surveillance-based maintenance system. Moreover, cell synchronization techniques, some of the most important parts of overhead functions, are examined from the point of cell synchronization characteristics and transmission of O&M functions. The ATM is considered to be a promising transfer technique for broadband ISDN
