Abstract :
Summary form only given. The face of optical communications has changed dramatically over the past few years. Transmission speed, capacity, and distance have significantly increased with each new development in optical technology. Erbium-doped amplifiers have led the revolution and introduced a requirement for many other technologies, such as high-performance chromatic-dispersion compensators, advanced wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) designs, laser wavelength referencing devices and new transmission fiber designs. This advancement in technology has led to a rise in the number of parameters that must be considered to ensure solid system performance. The tutorial will focus on design rules for high-speed optical transmission systems. A review of some of the future technologies required to overcome today´s technical hurdles and allow for further advancement in transmission capacity will be presented. In addition, there will be a discussion of design tools that the future system designer will need
