A proposal for meeting power demands of electric vehicle transportation in India

Abstract :
Due to economic progress, use of transport vehicles in India is growing up rapidly. Electric Vehicle (EV) entered the market recently. India spends 70 % of its foreign exchange reserves on petroleum imports. Time has come to increase use of EVs many fold conforming to global trend, which warrants substantial increase in power availability. Huge base load stations (thermal and nuclear) are being set up but there is no matching energy for peaking and storage to ensure a Smart Grid required for EVs. Large Reversible Hydro Stations will meet the requirements. An innovative concept of creating an Indian River Grid (IRG) by interlinking of Rivers in India has been evolved for multiple benefits including 65, 000 MW of Reversible Hydro Power, world´s largest power project. This paper describes details of IRG for meeting power demands of EV transportation in India. Applicability of this concept in other countries is also highlighted.
