  • Abstract
Dispersion compensating fibers are the optimum solution for upgrading conventional non-dispersion-shifted fiber that is already installed in the ground. However, we have shown that both dispersion compensating methods will impose limitations on system performance. Hence, future systems should be designed for use with non-zero dispersion fibers with very low dispersions. Such system architectures will eliminate four-wave-mixing and simultaneously reduce the need for dispersion compensating elements and extraneous optical amplifiers
