Abstract
This paper describes the rain attenuation characteristics of radio links and the possibility of outage free links. Since 1988, the NTT has been conducting continuous rain attenuation measurements on experimental radio links. The experiments have been carried out in Tokyo. The measured frequencies are 15, 18, 20 and 26 GHz with transmission distances of 0.75, 2.8, 6 and 9 km. Rain attenuation characteristics are measured with 0.1 sec time accuracy. Field trial results show that the measured rain attenuation distribution has a maximum value, and radio links with fading margins that exceed the maximum rain attenuation become outage-free
