Abstract :
The web is a huge collection of data, where large amount of data is added each and every day from multiple sources in various forms. We are actually drowning in information and starving for knowledge. The present day web (web 2.0) which we are using helps us to fetch any type of information what we wanted. But most of the information is irrelevant to the user´s perspective. The user has to refine, extract knowledge from the obtained bulk of information. The web is a collection of huge unstructured date. Where data is scattered all around without any proper structure. The present day web is not smarter enough to fetch the exact information for the user. To make the web smarter, efficient and effective, we introduce semantics to it. The semantic web (web 3.0) is a smart web. It can fetch the exact information what a user wanted. To achieve smartness in web 3.0 few components like XML, RDF, Ontology, and Owl are used. In this work we introduce the semantic web and its components. A survey of ontology is made which aims at representing knowledge for many contexts of applications. Our goal is to choose the most appropriate standard for representing knowledge and chose appropriate ontology in the context of problem solving.
