Abstract :
The performance of noncoherently detected, multilevel trellis-coded continuous phase modulation (CPM) schemes is studied. The optimal, in the maximum-likelihood detection sense, receiver is derived. Its general structure consists of an envelope detector, a discriminator detector, and a detection algorithm. Furthermore, to reduce the overall implementation complexity a reduced-complexity algorithm is also proposed. Finally, performance evaluation results, obtained by means of computer simulation, are presented for a MSK-type CPM signaling format with a modulation index of 0.25 and various levels of receiver complexity
