Abstract :
A simple model is presented to analyze the performance of optical fiber time-division multiple access (OF-TDMA) systems. The sensitivity analysis of OF-TDMA receivers is carried out by taking account of the effects of optical transmitter´s extinction ratio, photodetector and electrical amplifier noise. It is shown that the non-zero extinction ratio is a major impairment which significantly degrades the receiver sensitivity when the number of users N is large. Compared with the single-user system, an OF-TDMA system requires a far lower extinction ratio to alleviate the performance degradation when N is larger
