  • Abstract
    Three Lagrangians for dissipative linear systems (the multiplier, the image, and the Lagrangian functional) are scrutinized as bases for obtaining approximate solutions via direct methods of variational calculus. Approximate solutions for a linear one-dimensional dissipative oscillator are compared with the exact solution in order to determine the accuracy of the approximations provided by the three Lagrangians. The test functions, in the form of a one-parameter family of cubic parabolas, provide generally satisfactory solutions
