Abstract :
Dispersion-compensating modules (DCMs) are increasingly used to increase span length and number of spans in long-haul optical communication systems. Conventional DCMs contain long lengths of fiber. Consequently, it is not obvious that polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) of DCMs can be treated similarly as PMD for a simple birefringent element. In this presentation, we show measured statistical distribution of PMD and corresponding concatenation rules with other fibers and DCMs. The difficulties of exploring the tail of PMD distribution for DCMs and its implication on PMD budget for DCMs are also discussed
