  • Abstract
Summary form only given. Flux compression generators (FCGs) are devices that convert explosive energy into electromagnetic energy. FCGs are ideally suited for storing electromagnetic energy into an inductive load of low impedance, but not good for supplying fast-rising high-voltage pulse to a load of high impedance. For the purpose of powering high impedance loads such as microwave generators by using FCGs, a system, which can condition the output power of FCG, is needed. A power conditioning system generally consists of a storage inductor, an opening switch, a high-voltage transformer, and a closing switch. In this paper, three kinds of power conditioning systems were designed and the output properties of those were measured and analyzed. The first consisted of an explosively formed fuse opening switch (FOS), an epoxy molded pulsed transformer, and a water resistor load. The second consisted of a copper foil FOS, an epoxy molded pulsed transformer, and a carbon resistor load. The last consisted of a storage inductor, a thin copper wire FOS, and a capacitive load. In the tests, three systems supplied the high- voltage pulses of 172.7 kV, 118.0kV, and 811.0 kV, respectively. The detailed design and test results will be discussed in the presentation.
