Abstract :
Summary form only given. The linear dispersion relation of the quasi-TE mode for a sinusoidally corrugated, metal wall, slow wave structure (SWS) is extended and analyzed for the case of an intense relativistic electron beam. The results of numerical analysis are compared with the experimental results. The dispersion characteristics, such as the linear growth rate and bandwidth, of the quasi-TE/sub 11/ mode are numerically analyzed and compared with those of the conventional TM/sub 01/ mode. The period, mean radius and amplitude of the SWS are 1.2 cm, 1.445 cm and 0.445 cm, respectively. Typical beam energy and current are 100 keV and 500 A, respectively. The bandwidth of the quasi-TE/sub 11/ mode is wider than that of the TM/sub 01/ mode. The oscillation frequencies of the TM/sub 01/ and quasi-TE/sub 11/ mode are 8.5 and 8.9 GHz, respectively. The temporal growth rate of the TM/sub 01/ mode is larger than that of the quasi-TE/sub 11/ mode. We have performed an X-band BWO experiment using the SWS with size parameters identical to the above numerical analysis.
