Abstract
IPv4 to IPv6 transition is an inevitable process when deploying IPv6 networks within the present IPv4 Internet. The transition process is complex as it has to deal with issues related to IPv4-IPv6 interoperability including routing, DNS, error handling etc. A new solution named DTTS (dynamic tunneling transition solution) for IPv4 to IPv6 transition based on a dynamic tunneling technique and a dual stack approach is presented. The dynamic tunneling technique is used to encapsulate an IPv4 packet in an IPv6 packet to achieve transparent and scalable transition. This technique, coupled with the dual stack approach, enables IPv4 applications to run and interact with other IPv4 applications in both IPv4 and IPv6 network environments without any modification and recompilation, and without NAT (network address translator), nor any application proxy or gateway
