Abstract :
The first decade of the twenty first century saw the Indian electricity sector witnessing fast paced structural changes. Regulatory intervention and policy thrusts have been the significant drivers of this change. The utilities have also adapted to these changes. This paper outlines the various milestones crossed in the first decade and the newer challenges that the Indian electricity grid has to face in the coming years. Smart Grids would be the key to handle complexities arising out of the large meshed networks and with increasing penetration of renewable generation.
