Abstract
The author uses the theme of distributed intelligent systems to describe a holistic approach to modeling and designing stable and satisfying systems to meet the needs of autonomous agents. He starts with a description of how autonomous units interact. Interaction are defined as transmissions of energy or information (patterns of energy) generated by a source agent and received by a recipient agent. The essential difference between a description of the individual components and the description of their group behavior is considered. Some experimental results are described based on the experience of implementing wide-area systems connecting autonomous, decision making elements and the behavior of complex networks built upon autonomous, intelligent components. Case studies are included as examples of building symbiotic systems primarily for groups of economic agents. The last case is in the political arena
