Abstract :
Strategically removing transmission lines from service has been shown to produce significant system cost savings. This optimization of the transmission network topology is known as transmission switching. The mixed-integer linear programming problem presented by Optimal Transmission Switching is too complex to solve on large systems in real time. Here, we analyze the results of Optimal Transmission Switching on the RTS-96 network to identify network characteristics that may help identify solution sets and reduce computational complexity.
