Abstract
Railways are in a curious position as regards standardisation. The geographical spread of a railway is largely restricted by the land mass on which it operates, and from a pure operational point of view, as long as your railway is capable of "inter-operation" with other railways with which it is physically connected, the need for standardisation is limited by those geographical constraints.
