Abstract
Over the past decade, interconnection authorities have imposed fault ride-through capability requirements for wind farms. Both low voltage ride-through (LVRT) and 9-cycle zero-voltage ride-through requirement are included in FERC Order 661A This paper describes the solution developed by a major manufacturer that helped pioneer the application of type 4 (variable-speed full-converter) wind turbines. The paper will also briefly compare the LVRT characteristics of the type 4 machine with that of the more commonly used type 3 (DFAG) machine.
