Abstract
A technique of protocol conversion as a method of constructing gateways in different layers for the heterogeneous interconnection of networks is demonstrated. The formal approach is based on protocol complementation which is related to the layering of communication protocols. It is shown how protocol complementation is implemented in the gateways in order to achieve a uniform protocol for the virtual layer. This method can also be used to decide whether the protocol conversion is possible or not. This approach uses the International Organization for Standardization open systems interconnection (ISO-OSI) seven layer architecture
