Abstract :
In this paper we point out how simple it is to implement a rail-type electromagnetic aircraft launcher (EMAL) system to accelerate a mass of 25 metric tons to a velocity of 75 meters per second in a launcher with length 60 meters. This approximates what is required to launch fighter aircraft from an aircraft carrier. As with all EMAL systems, electrical energy is fed into the launcher along its length. The difference in our case is that the energy for launch is stored in homopolar generators (HPGs). We show that all the technologies required already exist. No new technologies are required. We show that the rail-type launcher, HPG powered, offers a low cost, reliable, launcher system for use on `all electric´ aircraft carriers.
