Abstract
Summary form only given. The Naval Research Laboratory is currently investigating gyro-amplifiers as high power, broadband sources for millimeter wave radars. A four stage W-band gyrotwystron amplifier experiment is now underway at NRL. The gyrotwystron has produced 50.4 kW peak output power at 17.7% electronic efficiency in the TE/sub 01/ mode for a 57 kV, 5 A electron beam. The measured full-width, half-maximum (FWHM) bandwidth is 925 MHz, a significant improvement over the bandwidth of previously demonstrated W-band gyroklystron amplifiers. The experimental results, which represent a record power-bandwidth product at this frequency, are in good agreement with theoretical predictions.
