Abstract :
A switch-mode voltage switching class E power converter has been developed for use with an electric-powered total artificial heart. This work outlines a procedure taken in utilizing class E power amplifier techniques for DC/DC conversion with transcutaneous powering. The power converter´s load network consists of a pair of coupled coils, matching circuit and rectifier/filter which determine the transient response. The converter will power the control systems and implantable rechargeable batteries of the Milwaukee total artificial heart, which together require 10 to 12 W (nominal). Small-size coupled coils and high efficiency (upper 80% presently) benefit from operation at 2.0 MHz
