Abstract
Consideration of the dynamic characteristics of file referencing behavior provides an appropriate basis for the design of effective algorithms for the management of a hierarchical file system. Several algorithms are proposed, based on similar algorithms in the memory referencing context. Trace-driven simulation experiments were conducted to assess the performance implications of these approaches. The results of these experiments show that the dynamic algorithms do achieve their performance objectives. More generally, the results reveal some interesting aspects of the problem and indicate some important differences between the domains of file referencing and memory management
