Abstract
A new MCAD that operates on the principle of diastolic counterpulsation has been developed. Among a number of physical variables that determine the performance of the device, the MCAD timing relative to the diastolic phase of the cardiac cycle was studied. The results from preliminary animal experiments indicate the important role of the system timing on the hemodynamic improvements. Optimal control timing exists to achieve the best overall hemodynamic effects for best coronary perfusion, maximum enhancement in stroke volume, and reduction in the afterload
