Abstract :
Rural utilities´ use of underground cable and equipment for distribution of energy to homes and businesses has grown exponentially over the last ten to twenty years in many parts of the United States. For optimal operations, these facilities require routine inspection and maintenance. In response to a need to be more proactive in this area, United Cooperative Services (United) developed a comprehensive underground distribution inspection and maintenance program in 2010. With over 800 miles of underground infrastructure, this was a major undertaking that required dedicating substantial resources to implement. Nearing completion of the first cycle of this program, United has been able to prevent future outages, lessen potential safety hazards, and improve construction standards and material selection for construction. Additionally, the program has provided United an opportunity for data collection that has greatly enhanced its Geographic Information System (GIS) model as well as other indirect benefits. United´s experience with the development and refinement of this process, along with specific examples from inspection data, can be invaluable for others seeking to develop and implement similar programs.
