Abstract :
The increase of dispersed generation has strong impact on network operation and design. Local equilibrium of load and generation in combination with implementing power electronics and storage opens the possibility for autonomous operating networks. These networks operate in cooperation with the total electric grid, resulting in manageable networks. In order to understand and to study the behaviour of the autonomous network the process of power supply will be split into several sub processes each with their own specific features and responsibilities. In cases where complex control is involved it is common to distinguish three process levels: the electrical layer, the control layer and an interface layer. For modelling the autonomous network it is useful to introduce a fourth layer called the outside world. The paper discusses a possible structure of these new networks and gives some requirements concerning the operation, control and modelling. At the end of the paper several aspects to be studied further are described.
