Abstract
This paper will discuss consideration for design and execution of smart grid technologies and the pros and cons of medium voltage direct current verses medium voltage alternating current. In addition, design consideration for islanding and holistic approach to smart design will be discussed as well as safety considerations with reference to alternating verses direct current. Overall discussion on what works, what does not and what technologies are currently available and what areas of new technologies need to be developed are also addressed.
