Abstract
The buffer allocation problem in complex stochastic production lines or queueing systems is intractable via conventional optimization techniques. Here a genetic algorithm based on simulation is adopted and it solves the problem efficiently. The algorithm is described in detail and illustrated by two examples. The advantages of the algorithm are also concluded
