Abstract
This paper proposes a method that integrates the lightning channel, the earth and the line together for the calculation of the induced voltage in an overhead line. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is used to obtain the electromagnetic field values near a cloud-to-ground lightning return-stroke channel, and then the field value is put into the discretized transmission line equations to calculate the induced voltage at the end of an overhead line. Further analysis show that the method proposed is more suitable for the calculation of induced voltage when the lightning strike point is in the vicinity of the overhead lines and the ground conductivity is finite
