Abstract
A systematic method of continuous-time adaptive equalizer design is introduced. The design of low-complexity, high-speed adaptive equalizers composed of an analog signal-path filter and a digital tap adaptation module is considered. Two features are incorporated into the design process: a complexity limit is imposed on the equalizer explicitly, and provisions are made for utilizing any statistical data available on the channel response and its likely variations. Five numerical techniques for equalizer design are formulated and compared through theoretical analysis and computer simulation. Some of resulting adaptive equalizers offer considerable improvements in performance over existing structures when employed on highly dispersive channels
