R & D industry, as an important part of the modern service industry, is on the high end of the value chain and important for upgrading industrial structure and speeding transformation of economy increase type. Through the analysis of the development history and characteristics of R & D industry, this paper explores its dynamic mechanism. We conclude that: 1) R & D industry has experienced four development periods in enterprise setting up internal R & D institutions, R & D activities stretching internally, R & D activities tending to externalization and R & D exteriorization intensified, with different characteristics; 2) Demand-pull, technology-push, competition-driven and government-led are the main driving force of industrial development.
