Abstract
In this paper, the effect of frequency synthesizer on the performance of millimeter wave stepped frequency radar is analyzed, including frequency synthesis technique (DDS and PLL), amplitude response, and sideband frequency modulation (spurs and phase noise). Firstly, the process of generating range profile with high range resolution by IDFT is described. Then, the effect of those factors is simulated separately to find out what effect happen to radar range profile. Finally, the simulation results indicate that the frequency response of frequency synthesizer affects not only the SNR but also the range resolution to radar, while the amplitude response and frequency modulation only affect the SNR to radar.
