Abstract
The author describes an integrated network recently installed for San Diego Gas and Electric in San Diego, CA. The general requirements of the system are described from the system operator´s perspective along with the unique features of both the topology and essential equipment elements that support the integration principle. It is noted that this private digital microwave and fiber-optic system is a modern integrated network using radio, fiber-optic, access, cross-connect, and switching technology. The wealth of bandwidth provided by the digital facilities, transparently transported over radio and fiber-optic equipment, can be treated as a commodity by the system operator. New services to meet the needs of internal and external customers can be delivered responsively. Capital and operational costs are reduced, and service availability and user convenience are improved by carefully considering the interconnect and interaction of the various elements of the network
