Abstract :
Based upon the coupled mode theory and spectral theory of diffraction by a dielectric half-plane (DHP), a novel method is presented for the determination of the radiation characteristics of a tapered slot antenna. The first step consists of obtaining an estimate for the slot electric field and surface electric current on the metallic part for a long and smooth tapered section between the input slot and a wide fictitious slot terminated by a load with specified reflection coefficient. In the second step this structure is truncated at z=0, and then the radiation of truncated surface electric current in the presence of a DHP is analyzed. The method was applied to several cases of practical interest, and in general the agreement between theoretical predictions and practice was found to be very satisfactory.<>
