Abstract :
An optical fibre current sensor has been developed for use in power transformer tapchanger diagnostics systems. The sensor system employs the Faraday effect and commercially available instrumentation to give electrical current measurements in the range 50 to 2000 amps with AC resolution and accuracy of 16 amps. Careful design has realised a transducer with very compact dimensions of 130×90×90 mm. This sensor system is made commercially viable by using existing, generic optical fibre sensing instrumentation based on chromatic, or spectral, modulation
