Abstract
A number of models have dealt with the receptive field (RF) properties of direction selective simple cells, but none address the question of how do these RFs develop. Here we present a model for the development of RFs for direction selective cortical cells based on the mechanism of diffusive cooperation and resource limited competition among the afferents converging on a cortical cell. Mean direction selective index obtained 0.32179 matches closely with the experimental data
