This paper outlines work in the ESPRIT project `Design Support for Distributed Industrial Controllers´ (DSDIC) to support and use the IEC 1131 standard in the production of large scale distributed industrial automation systems. The paper describes the general architecture and technical approach of DSDIC and discusses some of the practical problems that arise when applying the IEC standard
