Abstract :
The use of spherical mode analysis is introduced as a useful method of enhancing the design of practical arrays by including the effect of mutual coupling in a manner that allows many antenna types to be considered for each array. A small array can be accounted for by using addition theorems for the spherical modes in such a fashion that scattering quantities can be studied on a modal basis. The example of short dipoles in a parallel array was used to indicate the analytic information that can be obtained and to provide a more accurate synthesis procedure.<>
