Abstract :
The authors review methods of picosecond pulse generation by Q-switching and gain-switching in multicontact diode lasers. For the case of gain-switching, it is shown that the use of multicontact lasers can allow the generation of gain switched pulses with reduced linewidth when compared with conventional devices. By using both direct radio frequency electrical drive and saturable loss in multicontact Q-switched devices, monomode picosecond pulses can be generated at very much higher optical powers with improved pulse shape and jitter
