Abstract
Practical schemes whereby the tunability of self-mode-locked vibronic lasers (notably titanium-sapphire) can be expanded by nonlinear optical techniques are discussed. The configurations and the performance of self-mode-locked titanium-sapphire lasers that operate either in single or double spectral bands are briefly reviewed. The applicability of optical parametric oscillation is especially highlighted for enhanced source tunability in the near infrared and the potential of difference-frequency mixing for the generation of femtosecond pulses in the mid-infrared region is also discussed
