Abstract
A microwave/photonic vector modulator (MPVM) has been demonstrated previously by one of the authors using direct QPSK and 16-QAM modulation at carrier frequencies between 1.0 and 2.0 GHz with data rates to 8 Mb/s. This paper significantly extends this work in several areas to include greater than three octaves of carrier tunability, greater than 70 times increase in data rates to 600 Mb/s, and 27 dB of modulated waveform sidelobe level suppression; the latter is critically important for fiber radio applications requiring wireless transmission.
