Abstract :
VARTA has investigated the float charging of VRLA batteries under various charging and environmental conditions. We found out that under special conditions one of the electrodes is continuously discharged although the cell is on float charge with 2.23 V. To get a complete picture we derived the kinetic parameters of the relevant reactions and developed a mathematical model. With this model we can give guide lines for the appropriate design and can define the proper operating conditions for VRLA-batteries. The monitoring of telecom batteries is to our understanding an integral part of the battery manufacturers scope of supply. Clear responsibility, correct analysis of the battery condition at site and immediate action if necessary count for it. The authors briefly describe the reaction model, the kinetic parameters, and integrated battery monitoring with the VARTA multilogic system
